Book: Why I failed

About the book:

TO REDISCOVERING THE POWER OF YOU: WHY FAILURE IS CRUCIAL TO GROW

Chances are that the more you strive to do, at some point, you will stumble. The more you push yourself beyond your comfort zone, you will at some point fail or fall. And that’s ok. But the ability to win begins with you and that’s when you have to deep dive within to find that power. Remember it is not failure that defines you but what you do with it.

Come, join us for a conversation exploring Failure in all its glory.

Based on the bestselling ‘Why I Failed’, we decode failure and how it can inspire us, help us make better choices, toughen us up to embark on our next journey.

–We will talk about people who have failed and what they decided to do with it

–What can you do when you face a setback or a failure

–How do you find that power and strength within to take the next step

The session would include the reading of the book with the author, herself, discussion about the journey of writing this book and a Q & A session afterward.

BOOK LAUNCH THE KIPLING FILE BY SUDHIR KAKAR @ GOETHE-INSTITUT / MAX MUELLER BHAVAN NEW DELHI | New Delhi | Delhi | India

Book Launch: The Kipling File. By Sudhir Kakar

 Overview

In the cultural hub of 1880s’ Lahore Kay Robinson has taken over as editor of the Civil and Military Gazette. Assisting him is the young and impressionable Rudyard Kipling, a lonely, impulsive man who dreams of becoming a writer. Kipling’s literary pursuits have been dismissed as fanciful and foolish by his previous boss. But Robinson is different. He encourages the young ‘Ruddy’, allowing him greater creative freedom at the Gazette. As he becomes Ruddy’s friend and confidant, Robinson gains access to intimate glimpses of the Kipling family, where he is smitten by Ruddy’s sister Trix.

Narrated by Robinson, The Kipling File is a moving story of doomed friendship and difficult love recounted against the powerful backdrop of Anglo-Indian life in a Punjab that has begun to stir with anti-colonial sentiment. Through his eyes unfold the turmoils that shaped the author of beloved classics like The Jungle Book and Kim.

In Sudhir Kakar’s luminous prose, Kipling emerges as a man of compelling contradictions-a mercurial genius whose immense talent was in pitched battle with his inner demons.

New Delhi, Jan 28: Centre for Escalation of Peace (CEP), India International Centre (IIC) and Sahapedia are organising a two-day conference on the rich tradition and legacy associated with Guru Padmasambhava, one of the most revered and iconic figures for Buddhists today.

The conference, titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’, will be held on January 29-30 at IIC in New Delhi. The event will bring together some of the most distinguished scholars from India, Nepal and Bhutan, who will retrace aspects of the Guru’s life and will highlight the contemporary relevance of the Guru’s teachings as well as the rich, diverse tradition associated with the 8th century Rinpoche. The conference is slated to be one of the events celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.

Ambassador Shyam Saran, Life Trustee of the IIC, said, “Guru Padmasambhava is known as the Second Buddha because he played a seminal role in spreading Buddhism and Buddhist teachings across the Himalayan region, including Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan and, Tibet.” Mr. N.N. Vohra, President of the IIC, will inaugurate the event. The keynote address will be delivered by Dasho Karma Ura, President of Centre for Bhutan Studies, who is also credited with developing the Himalayan country’s Gross National Happiness concept. Other speakers include accomplished Buddhist practitioners such as Mingyur Rinpoche, Neten Chockling Rinpoche and distinguished scholars such as Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Karma Phuntsho and Ian Baker.

The conference, which is open to the public, will be documented and presentations will eventually be available on www.cepeace.org and www.sahapedia.org. Mr. Arun Kapur, Director of Centre for Escalation of Peace, said, “Guru Padmasambhava undertook many travels across India, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. A study into his travels demonstrates his ability to contextualize and localize his message, taking into account the particularities of place and sensibilities of the people. Guru Rinpoche found a way to celebrate our individual differences in our shared commonalities. That is why, in addition to bringing into focus the contemporary relevance of his teachings and the rich and diverse tradition associated with him, this conference is dedicated to the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. Centre for Escalation of Peace organized the first Padmasambhava Conference in 2016 in Bhutan, in collaboration with Centre for Bhutan Studies, Thimphu, as a joint event to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava in Paro, Bhutan, on 14-15 June 2016.”

The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of rare thangka paintings, sculptures and photographs associated with the sage. Exhibits have been loaned by both individuals and organizations, including from His Majesty’s Secretariat, Bhutan, Tibet House, Delhi, the Palpung Sherabling Monastery, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and Tsurphu Labrang. The exhibition, to be mounted at the IIC Art Gallery, will be open for public viewing from January 29 until February 3.

Conference sessions will range from the local contexts associated with Guru Padmasambhava, texts and commentaries to the ritual practices, mandalas and iconography that are central to Vajrayana Buddhism.

Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Sahapedia, stressed: “It is important to organize such exchanges of learning on Buddhism, to make them available for as many people as possible. While the conference is open to all, we realize that the vast majority of those who want to learn about Guru Padmasambhava and Buddhism cannot be present in person during those two days.”

The conference will be telecast live on Facebook and on YouTube.

What’s Happening?

Routine can sometimes get too monotonous and boring, right? We hear you! Make your Saturday evening a bit more fun with Instant Kisse, a spontaneous storytelling session with Anand Sivakumaran happening on August 8 at 5 PM via Zoom. Anand Sivakumaran is an author, screenwriter and podcaster who loves to instantly come up with stories and entertain you. In this interactive session, for every word you throw or prompt him with, he will tell you a story for the same. For example, you say Astrophysics and he will tell you how Vidyut travelled from the Great Wall to an alternate reality without phones or cars, you say Greatest Love of All and he will tell you about Harsh who hoarded plastic bags, until the day the BMC dude came calling. During the session, you can throw word prompts, dialogues, names of people and they would become part of the story – e.g. Isabgol, Trump, Mere Karan Arjun aayenge, are all added to a story about twins fighting over a bag of chips.
