urangzeb is a well-known play in Hindi theatre which is running from last ten years. Here is a chance to witness it once again.
When Emperor Shahjahan fell ill in 1657, a war of succession broke out among his four sons, Dara Shukoh, Shuja, Aurangzeb and Murad. The main contenders were Dara and Aurangzeb while Shahjahans two daughters Jahanara and Roshanara, supported Dara and Aurangzeb respectively. The Emperor himself lent his support to his eldest son Dara, who alone of the four brothers, was present at Agra and sympathetic to Shahjahans dream plan of building a black-marble-mahal for himself on the other side of Yamuna facing Mumtazs Tajmahal.
The play begins with the conversation between two of Aurangzebs spies in Agra Fort, who tell us of others spying on them, indicating Aurangzebs suspicious nature as well as his attempt to be in control. The play selects, telescopes and fuses events to capture the fissures as well as the peaks of a period of history. The war of succession to throne and issues and ideologies that the major players in the drama represent: Shahjahan symbolizes a decadent, self-indulgent, romantic aestheticism; Aurangzeb articulates and fiercely fights to establish an Islamic fundamentalist state, and Dara projects himself as a philosopher-statesman striving to preserve a pluralist society and nation. Shahjahan dreams about a black-marble-mahal for himself, Aurangzeb dreams of one nation, one language, one religion, while Dara fears that Aurangzeb will destroy the precious heritage of Akbar.
The play has as its theme the struggles of mutually contradictory dispositions of the various characters: Shahjahan and Aurangzeb; Dara and Aurangzeb; Jahanara and Roshanara; and finally Aurangzeb versus Aurangzeb. Shahjahan lives in the past, Dara in the future, and Aurangzeb in the present. Aurangzebs success is the triumph of pragmatism but he has to pay dearly as we find him in the last scene sitting not on his Peacock throne but beside it on the floor. His loneliness becomes his tragedy. The play ends with him asking himself the question: Am I a devout Muslim or a fanatic? He is left awaiting the judgment of history.

The play depicts the important events of freedom revolution and atrocities done by the Britishers on Indians. It shows how each and every revolutionary made his/her contribution to the independence movement and how important was each one of them.

The Pandit suggests that why dont they have the Tribute Ceremony there itself. It will help them to pass their time and will also maintain the seriousness of the death.
Since everybody is in the same ruins, the other people, who have no connections with Bharose ji or his death, also get involved in the errors and blunders and create a hilarious situation.

For a proper understanding of India’s ancient dramaturgy, a careful study of Kutiyattam is as essential as the study of Bharata’s Natyasastra. 5th Jash E Rekhta – Urdu celebration
5th Jash E Rekhta – Urdu celebration: Jashn-e-Rekhta is a three-day festival celebrated annually in Delhi under the aegis of the Rekhta Foundation, a not-for-profit organization devoted wholeheartedly to the preservation and promotion of the Urdu language, its literature and culture.
Within the last four years, 5th Jash E Rekhta – Urdu celebration has left behind the trappings of a festival to emerge as an excellent celebration of Urdu, its rich heritage and eclectic art forms. The event includes splendid musical performances of ghazals and qawwalis by renowned artistes. Additional activities include dastangoi renditions, panel discussions, poetry recitations and enriching conversations with celebrities. Items decorated with calligraphy and other goods are also available and visitors can enjoy a variety of local as well as Middle Eastern cuisine at the food stalls.

The conference, titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’, will be held on January 29-30 at IIC in New Delhi. The event will bring together some of the most distinguished scholars from India, Nepal and Bhutan, who will retrace aspects of the Guru’s life and will highlight the contemporary relevance of the Guru’s teachings as well as the rich, diverse tradition associated with the 8th century Rinpoche. The conference is slated to be one of the events celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.

New Delhi, Jan 28: Centre for Escalation of Peace (CEP), India International Centre (IIC) and Sahapedia are organising a two-day conference on the rich tradition and legacy associated with Guru Padmasambhava, one of the most revered and iconic figures for Buddhists today.
The conference, titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’, will be held on January 29-30 at IIC in New Delhi. The event will bring together some of the most distinguished scholars from India, Nepal and Bhutan, who will retrace aspects of the Guru’s life and will highlight the contemporary relevance of the Guru’s teachings as well as the rich, diverse tradition associated with the 8th century Rinpoche. The conference is slated to be one of the events celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.
Ambassador Shyam Saran, Life Trustee of the IIC, said, “Guru Padmasambhava is known as the Second Buddha because he played a seminal role in spreading Buddhism and Buddhist teachings across the Himalayan region, including Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan and, Tibet.” Mr. N.N. Vohra, President of the IIC, will inaugurate the event. The keynote address will be delivered by Dasho Karma Ura, President of Centre for Bhutan Studies, who is also credited with developing the Himalayan country’s Gross National Happiness concept. Other speakers include accomplished Buddhist practitioners such as Mingyur Rinpoche, Neten Chockling Rinpoche and distinguished scholars such as Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Karma Phuntsho and Ian Baker.
The conference, which is open to the public, will be documented and presentations will eventually be available on www.cepeace.org and www.sahapedia.org. Mr. Arun Kapur, Director of Centre for Escalation of Peace, said, “Guru Padmasambhava undertook many travels across India, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. A study into his travels demonstrates his ability to contextualize and localize his message, taking into account the particularities of place and sensibilities of the people. Guru Rinpoche found a way to celebrate our individual differences in our shared commonalities. That is why, in addition to bringing into focus the contemporary relevance of his teachings and the rich and diverse tradition associated with him, this conference is dedicated to the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. Centre for Escalation of Peace organized the first Padmasambhava Conference in 2016 in Bhutan, in collaboration with Centre for Bhutan Studies, Thimphu, as a joint event to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava in Paro, Bhutan, on 14-15 June 2016.”
The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of rare thangka paintings, sculptures and photographs associated with the sage. Exhibits have been loaned by both individuals and organizations, including from His Majesty’s Secretariat, Bhutan, Tibet House, Delhi, the Palpung Sherabling Monastery, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and Tsurphu Labrang. The exhibition, to be mounted at the IIC Art Gallery, will be open for public viewing from January 29 until February 3.
Conference sessions will range from the local contexts associated with Guru Padmasambhava, texts and commentaries to the ritual practices, mandalas and iconography that are central to Vajrayana Buddhism.
Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Sahapedia, stressed: “It is important to organize such exchanges of learning on Buddhism, to make them available for as many people as possible. While the conference is open to all, we realize that the vast majority of those who want to learn about Guru Padmasambhava and Buddhism cannot be present in person during those two days.”

The Play
Desaparecidos#43 aims to give voice to the dramatic event of the 43 Mexican students of Ayotzinapa who disappeared on 26th September 2014. It is a strong performance of great emotional impact, an artistic Re-Action to a tragic reality: the en-forced disappearances afflicting Mexico, and an original dramaturgy, made not only of words but also of physical actions, sounds, songs and projected images.
Director’s Note
Desaparecidos#43 is not only a performance but also an authentic act of rebellion, a work exalting freedom of opinion, expression and demonstration, which are being worldwide threatened. It is an artistic example of the international influence of mass media and globalization and how they can sensitise the public opinion and help to ask for justice. It is a hope hymn, able to let red flowers grow from a stack of bloody clothes – ‘They wanted to bury us but they didn’t know we were seeds’.
The Director
Anna Dora Dorno was born in 1976 in Italy. She graduated at the University of Bologna – Department of Music and Performance. In 2004 she founded the experimental theatre company Instabili Vaganti. She has directed and acting in – Avan-lulu, which received the special award of the Jury at the 6th International Festival of Theatre and Visual Arts, Zdarzenia (Poland), The Ritual, the result of a 10-year research project all around the world and performed at the 18 Bharat Rang Mahostav in Delhi, Ausencia – Alone in the crowd, premiered at the 32nd Fadjr International festival of Teheran (Iran), Made In Ilva, which received a nomination at the Total Theatre Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014 and was the winner of 10 national awards for the best performance, Desparecidos#43 based on the true story of the missing students in Mexico and winner of the patronage of Amnesty International. She holds workshops for performers in universities and academies all over the world including: Grotowski Institute in Poland, Shanghai Theatre Academy in China, National School of Drama in India, and UNAM in Mexico.
The Playwright
Born in 1977 in Italy, Nicola Pianzola graduated at the University of Bologna – Department of Music and Performance. He graduated in physical theatre at the Nouveau Cirque school of Bologna and at the Grotowski Institute of Wroclaw (Poland). He is currently a performer and playwright in all the productions of Instabili Vaganti Theatre Company. He has won several national and international awards as a performer of the solo show Made in Ilva including the nomination at the Total Theatre Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014. He collaborates with the University of Bologna, Department of Music And Performance where he gives workshops, work demonstrations, lectures and film screenings about physical theatre. He won the DAMS award for his research and experience in theatre with actors with handicaps. He writes for Hystrio theatre magazine and fattiditeatro theatre webzine.

Screening of the Italian Movie ‘Le notti di Cabiria’
Le notti di Cabiria (English: Nights of Cabiria) is a 1957 Italian drama film directed by Federico Fellini and starring Giulietta Masina, François Périer, and Amedeo Nazzari. Based on a story by Fellini, the film is about a prostitute in Rome who searches for true love in vain.
Nights of Cabiria won the 1957 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This was the second straight year Italy and Fellini won this Academy Award, having won for 1956’s La Strada, which also starred Giulietta Masina.
Storyline: Rome, 1957. A woman, Cabiria, is robbed and left to drown by her boyfriend, Giorgio. Rescued, she resumes her life and tries her best to find happiness in a cynical world. Even when she thinks her struggles are over and she has found happiness and contentment, things may not be what they seem.
