Mar 16 @ 2:00 pm – Mar 17 @ 10:00 pm
Dilli Durbar: Indian Classical Music Fest @ Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts | New Delhi | Delhi | India

What’s Happening

Dilli Durbar: Indian Classical Music Fest – Dilli Durbar is an Indian classical music fest that’s happening on Match 16 and 17 at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. The music fest is calling upon classical music lovers, poetry preachers, and those gaga over ghazals. There’ll be live performances by some formidable names such as Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Shahid Parvez and others.

The festival, in addition to soulful music, will also have talks and discussions about the classical music industry with music maestros like Kailash Kher, Piyush Mishra, Javed Ali taking to the stage.

Movie buffs, rejoice, for there’ll be documentary and film screenings at the fest as well (all related to music, of course), and if you’re feeling a little extra melodious, there’ll be an open mic waiting for you to pour your heart out.

And hey, since no music festival is complete without food, you’ll be treating yourself to proper Purani Dilli Ka khaana.

The entry is free. However, you do have to register.

“Strings in Harmony” with Lakshay Mohan(Sitar) and Aayush Mohan(Sarod)

“Strings in Harmony” with Lakshay Mohan(Sitar) and Aayush Mohan(Sarod)

Praised and promoted by the legendary musician Pandit Ravi Shankar himself, the Mohan Brothers – Lakshay Mohan(Sitar) and Aayush Mohan(Sarod) are all set to perform for the India Edition of ‘Strings in Harmony’ – A concert that has toured esteemed venues in the USA like Symphony Space, New York , Berklee College Boston, and was featured on FOX television channel in USA. The concert tour is now coming to 3 cities in India.

ABOUT ARTISTS

The Mohan Brothers, Lakshay Mohan & Aayush Mohan, are reviving the lost art of playing the duet of Sitar & Sarod. Pioneered by Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan in early 50s, a long standing Sitar & Sarod duet is now a rarity in the world of Indian classical music. They are the first Indian musicians to be invited to perform at the Grammy Museum, Los Angeles. They were nominated for the Global Indian Music Academy Awards in 2016.

As quoted by the Times of India on their performance at Sawai Gandharv, the biggest classical music festival of India, “The duo flirted with their supreme talent and young age to give a double layered performance. The lyrical beauty was out of the top drawer. Showing immense craftsmanship, they won the hearts of the weekend audience.” The flagship Indian Government TV channel ‘DD National’ recently telecast a special talk show on how the Mohan Brothers, who do not belong to a traditional classical musicians’ family, have come to be so popular across all music loving audience at a young age.

For every duet concert, Mohan Brothers choose a Raga (melody) and while developing the melody they experiment with new phrases and carve out an intricate rendition full of musical dialogues which are improvised spontaneously on the stage. A Mohan Brothers’ recital is full of vibrant musical sounds woven together through their innovative style of making music.

Indian Classical Music Appreciation

A Beginners’ Guide to

Indian Classical Music

Music Appreciation Workshop

with Eshan

 12th October, Saturday | 9:30 am till 1:30 pm

Indian Classical music was once considered one of the easiest paths to spiritual enlightenment due to its inherent simplicity. However, with the passage of time, it has also evolved into a performing art. Despite the transformation, its inherent structure is still based on the art of improvisation, which is its primary USP.

Unlike composed music, the same Raga by the same artist sounds completely different on each occasion. There is a constant element of surprise and fascination for the listener.

The artist/student gets the opportunity to be the performer and the composer at the same time and create something new with each attempt instead of endlessly working towards recreating other artists’ work.

Raga music’s instinctive, intuitive, and improvisational nature makes it a direct extension of the artist’s personality and state of mind. It serves as a tool for self-expression and self-discovery, giving the artist space to be more authentic and the listeners, an opportunity to feel much more personally connected to the artist and the art itself.

Without most of us realizing, Indian Classical Music also heavily influences genres like film music, ghazals, bhajans, Sufi music, and much more. Therefore, even an elementary understanding of Raga music can greatly enhance the listening experience of the average listener.

The world of Indian Classical music has something to offer for everyone; be it people looking for entertainment or tools for self-discovery and everything else in between.

Topic Covered in the Workshop:

1) Discussion on North Indian classical, semi-classical and film music; its structure (Sur, Raga, and Taal), its nuances, various genres, aesthetics, instruments, artists, gharanas, etc.

2) Busting myths associated with Indian music, highlighting false practices in music education and discussing correct methodology of studying music.

3) Guidelines on how to find genuine music teachers and institutes.

4) Q&A session

The workshop is divided into four sessions of one hour each.

Session 1 – Introduction to Sur and Raga (Musical Notes and Scales)

Session 2 – Introduction to Taal (Rhythm)

Session 3 – Explaining similarities and differences between various genres of Indian music like Dhrupad, Khayaal, Thumri, Ghazal and Film.

Session 4 – Busting myths associated with Indian music, highlighting false practices in music education and discussing the correct methodology of studying music. Guidelines on how to find genuine music teachers & institutes.

Whether you are an aspiring musician or just someone who enjoys listening to music, this workshop has something to offer for everyone.

About Eshan

Eshan is an Indian classical musician (Vocalist) and freelance teacher. He is currently under the tutelage of Padmashri Gundecha Brothers at their Gurukul, Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal. He has studied Khayaal for 7 years and now he is studying Dhrupad for the last 2 years. He conducts music appreciation workshops for school and college students as well as adults from different walks of life.

Eshan says “The more I study art the more I realize how its meant for everyone but sadly arts, especially the classical arts have become the domain of the elite and the intellectual. Through these workshops, I wish to bring common people close to artists who are presently far removed from it. “

Eshan also has a background in western classical dance, primarily jazz. He has studied, taught and performed with The Danceworx, Delhi.
