Indian Classical Music Appreciation
A Beginners’ Guide to
Indian Classical Music
Music Appreciation Workshop
with Eshan
12th October, Saturday | 9:30 am till 1:30 pm
Indian Classical music was once considered one of the easiest paths to spiritual enlightenment due to its inherent simplicity. However, with the passage of time, it has also evolved into a performing art. Despite the transformation, its inherent structure is still based on the art of improvisation, which is its primary USP.
Unlike composed music, the same Raga by the same artist sounds completely different on each occasion. There is a constant element of surprise and fascination for the listener.
The artist/student gets the opportunity to be the performer and the composer at the same time and create something new with each attempt instead of endlessly working towards recreating other artists’ work.
Raga music’s instinctive, intuitive, and improvisational nature makes it a direct extension of the artist’s personality and state of mind. It serves as a tool for self-expression and self-discovery, giving the artist space to be more authentic and the listeners, an opportunity to feel much more personally connected to the artist and the art itself.
Without most of us realizing, Indian Classical Music also heavily influences genres like film music, ghazals, bhajans, Sufi music, and much more. Therefore, even an elementary understanding of Raga music can greatly enhance the listening experience of the average listener.
The world of Indian Classical music has something to offer for everyone; be it people looking for entertainment or tools for self-discovery and everything else in between.
Topic Covered in the Workshop:
1) Discussion on North Indian classical, semi-classical and film music; its structure (Sur, Raga, and Taal), its nuances, various genres, aesthetics, instruments, artists, gharanas, etc.
2) Busting myths associated with Indian music, highlighting false practices in music education and discussing correct methodology of studying music.
3) Guidelines on how to find genuine music teachers and institutes.
4) Q&A session
The workshop is divided into four sessions of one hour each.
Session 1 – Introduction to Sur and Raga (Musical Notes and Scales)
Session 2 – Introduction to Taal (Rhythm)
Session 3 – Explaining similarities and differences between various genres of Indian music like Dhrupad, Khayaal, Thumri, Ghazal and Film.
Session 4 – Busting myths associated with Indian music, highlighting false practices in music education and discussing the correct methodology of studying music. Guidelines on how to find genuine music teachers & institutes.
Whether you are an aspiring musician or just someone who enjoys listening to music, this workshop has something to offer for everyone.
