POETRY UNBLOCK

An Activity Oriented Poetry Workshop

  • The poetry workshop conducted by Pepperscript is meant to give those who register an overall understanding of the kinds/types of poems, their writing styles, the technicalities and structuring of a poem.
  • From confessional poetry, something that Sylvia Plath and closer to home Kamala Das wrote to Lyrical poetry, ekphrastic poetry, Eulogies, haibuns, free verse, prose poetry, etc- many of these forms of poetry will be discussed in detail.
  • The ways all the well-known poets implement their writing styles will be talked about.
  • With a major focus on Indian writers writing in English, the workshop will focus on the importance and the stance of poetry publication in India.
  • Apart from imparting hands-on knowledge, there will be various activities that will help you enhance your skill and incorporate various poetic ways in your own writing. The activities will eventually lead to self-learning.
  • Also, win a chance to publish your work with PepperScript India’s fastest growing independent publishing house.

Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Book Launch - The Love Song of Maya & Other Stories @ Annexe India International Centre, Lecture hall II

A rumour that ends in calamity; A girl who is demonised because of her ‘evil’ horoscope; A man who preys upon young girls; A train journey that forces a woman to look at her marriage anew; The gorgeous inner life of a shop girl; A child overwhelmed by the wonder and terror of his world…
Set in Kolkata and Delhi, the stories in this collection deal with love and betrayal, dogma and superstition, sexuality and thwarted desires. The characters belong to the world of urban, aspirational India where snobbery and rat race go hand in hand with class and religious conflicts.
Dark or funny, satirical or poignant, these stories are as much a snapshot of modern India as they are an intense crystallisation of the unpredictable chaos of life.

Come to the book launch and meet the likes of  Mrinal Pande (Writer, Former Chairperson of Prasar Bharati, Senior Group Editorial Advisor to the National Herald Group),
Anita Agnihotri (Writer and Former Civil Servant), Poonam Saxena (Writer, Translator and National Weekend Editor, Hindustan Times).

to explore life and legacy of ‘Second Buddha’

New Delhi, Jan 28: Centre for Escalation of Peace (CEP), India International Centre (IIC) and Sahapedia are organising a two-day conference on the rich tradition and legacy associated with Guru Padmasambhava, one of the most revered and iconic figures for Buddhists today.

The conference, titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’, will be held on January 29-30 at IIC in New Delhi. The event will bring together some of the most distinguished scholars from India, Nepal and Bhutan, who will retrace aspects of the Guru’s life and will highlight the contemporary relevance of the Guru’s teachings as well as the rich, diverse tradition associated with the 8th century Rinpoche. The conference is slated to be one of the events celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.

Ambassador Shyam Saran, Life Trustee of the IIC, said, “Guru Padmasambhava is known as the Second Buddha because he played a seminal role in spreading Buddhism and Buddhist teachings across the Himalayan region, including Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan and, Tibet.” Mr. N.N. Vohra, President of the IIC, will inaugurate the event. The keynote address will be delivered by Dasho Karma Ura, President of Centre for Bhutan Studies, who is also credited with developing the Himalayan country’s Gross National Happiness concept. Other speakers include accomplished Buddhist practitioners such as Mingyur Rinpoche, Neten Chockling Rinpoche and distinguished scholars such as Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Karma Phuntsho and Ian Baker.

The conference, which is open to the public, will be documented and presentations will eventually be available on www.cepeace.org and www.sahapedia.org. Mr. Arun Kapur, Director of Centre for Escalation of Peace, said, “Guru Padmasambhava undertook many travels across India, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. A study into his travels demonstrates his ability to contextualize and localize his message, taking into account the particularities of place and sensibilities of the people. Guru Rinpoche found a way to celebrate our individual differences in our shared commonalities. That is why, in addition to bringing into focus the contemporary relevance of his teachings and the rich and diverse tradition associated with him, this conference is dedicated to the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. Centre for Escalation of Peace organized the first Padmasambhava Conference in 2016 in Bhutan, in collaboration with Centre for Bhutan Studies, Thimphu, as a joint event to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava in Paro, Bhutan, on 14-15 June 2016.”

The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of rare thangka paintings, sculptures and photographs associated with the sage. Exhibits have been loaned by both individuals and organizations, including from His Majesty’s Secretariat, Bhutan, Tibet House, Delhi, the Palpung Sherabling Monastery, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and Tsurphu Labrang. The exhibition, to be mounted at the IIC Art Gallery, will be open for public viewing from January 29 until February 3.

Conference sessions will range from the local contexts associated with Guru Padmasambhava, texts and commentaries to the ritual practices, mandalas and iconography that are central to Vajrayana Buddhism.

Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Sahapedia, stressed: “It is important to organize such exchanges of learning on Buddhism, to make them available for as many people as possible. While the conference is open to all, we realize that the vast majority of those who want to learn about Guru Padmasambhava and Buddhism cannot be present in person during those two days.”

The conference will be telecast live on Facebook and on YouTube.

Why should Artists Unite ? This is a time when cultural and social life in India is being torn asunder by a toxic cocktail of propaganda, violence, censorship and distorted histories. The right to life, the right to love, food choices, language and histories, cultural expression, all are under assault by a politics of hate which is at war with the people of India and their diverse cultures.

As artists and cultural practitioners we re-dedicate ourselves at this critical moment to defend a culture that speaks of love, equality and solidarity. We will fight hate with love. We will counter violence with peace. Through our images, speech, words, music and bodies we will resist the cultural destruction of India.
Artists and writers are witness to and participants in the evolution of a culture that acquires its strength from diverse influences that together transform into the promise of Indian democracy, a promise that finds its echo in the Indian constitution. Democracy is not a majoritarian project to identify enemies and enforce uniformity of language, behaviour and culture. Democracy is the celebration of a collective will for peace, of living together with dignity and equality.
