Sridhar in Fibre Weaving, Telangana and AP, Harikishan in Pottery, New Delhi, Sabina Khatoon in Batik, West Bengal, and Abdul Wahab Khatri in Tie and Dye, Gujarat. The innovative art pieces thus created will be displayed in the last two days.
Established in 1986, Dastkari Haat Samiti helps over 60,000 artisans by organizing annual crafts bazaar all over India that provide them with the exposure and bring them into direct contact with the urban customer. Supporting over 350 crafts groups across the 29 Indian states, the organization believes in helping artisans and their families in preserving and providing for their livelihood.
Sustainable, immersive and uplifting, the bazaar holds special attraction for kids as well with traditional regional cuisines, cultural performances, sustainable clothing and eco friendly toys!
“Since the inception in 1986 of the organization and of our crafts bazaars all over India our aim has been to break the barriers between the craftsmen and community by giving them a platform to showcase their craft. Our annual Craft Bazaar at Dilli Haat brings that authenticity of handloom and handmade products back with traditional weaves, sustainable home decor and so many more crafts from different states of India.”, shares Ms Jaya Jaitly, Founder of Dastkari Haat Samiti.
With more than 180 artisans coming together, the craft bazaar will feature everything from a wide range of Vankar shawls of Gujarat, Banarasi textiles from Uttar Pradesh, Handloom Fabrics from Bengal, Bandhani from Gujarat, Handwoven Chanderi, Softest of Pashminas, Ajrakh block printing, Kantha embroidery, Pattachitra paintings, Inlay furniture, papier mache, carpets, durries, home decor accessories and organic products.
A special appeal from Dastkari Haat Samiti – from Jaya Jaitly – Founder of Dilli Haat
Amidst the regular traders who have managed to occupy Dilli Haat for long periods and sell cheap goods made in small factories, Dastkari Haat challenges them by presenting true crafts made by true craftspeople, who seldom get an opportunity to come to Dilli Haat.
The Samiti appeals to the citizens of Delhi and true friends of authentic crafts, to support it by buying crafts, textiles and arts from its stalls during its bazaar. It can always visit Dilli haat another time to buy from its regular occupants.
Remember, the bazaar is entirely self-funded by the craftspeople. The décor, cultural performances and publicity is paid for by sharing equally among them. Let them not lose sales by having traders who are regular occupants compete with them by bargaining or sharing costs.

New Delhi, Jan 28: Centre for Escalation of Peace (CEP), India International Centre (IIC) and Sahapedia are organising a two-day conference on the rich tradition and legacy associated with Guru Padmasambhava, one of the most revered and iconic figures for Buddhists today.
The conference, titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’, will be held on January 29-30 at IIC in New Delhi. The event will bring together some of the most distinguished scholars from India, Nepal and Bhutan, who will retrace aspects of the Guru’s life and will highlight the contemporary relevance of the Guru’s teachings as well as the rich, diverse tradition associated with the 8th century Rinpoche. The conference is slated to be one of the events celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.
Ambassador Shyam Saran, Life Trustee of the IIC, said, “Guru Padmasambhava is known as the Second Buddha because he played a seminal role in spreading Buddhism and Buddhist teachings across the Himalayan region, including Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan and, Tibet.” Mr. N.N. Vohra, President of the IIC, will inaugurate the event. The keynote address will be delivered by Dasho Karma Ura, President of Centre for Bhutan Studies, who is also credited with developing the Himalayan country’s Gross National Happiness concept. Other speakers include accomplished Buddhist practitioners such as Mingyur Rinpoche, Neten Chockling Rinpoche and distinguished scholars such as Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Karma Phuntsho and Ian Baker.
The conference, which is open to the public, will be documented and presentations will eventually be available on www.cepeace.org and www.sahapedia.org. Mr. Arun Kapur, Director of Centre for Escalation of Peace, said, “Guru Padmasambhava undertook many travels across India, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. A study into his travels demonstrates his ability to contextualize and localize his message, taking into account the particularities of place and sensibilities of the people. Guru Rinpoche found a way to celebrate our individual differences in our shared commonalities. That is why, in addition to bringing into focus the contemporary relevance of his teachings and the rich and diverse tradition associated with him, this conference is dedicated to the 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. Centre for Escalation of Peace organized the first Padmasambhava Conference in 2016 in Bhutan, in collaboration with Centre for Bhutan Studies, Thimphu, as a joint event to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava in Paro, Bhutan, on 14-15 June 2016.”
The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of rare thangka paintings, sculptures and photographs associated with the sage. Exhibits have been loaned by both individuals and organizations, including from His Majesty’s Secretariat, Bhutan, Tibet House, Delhi, the Palpung Sherabling Monastery, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and Tsurphu Labrang. The exhibition, to be mounted at the IIC Art Gallery, will be open for public viewing from January 29 until February 3.
Conference sessions will range from the local contexts associated with Guru Padmasambhava, texts and commentaries to the ritual practices, mandalas and iconography that are central to Vajrayana Buddhism.
Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Sahapedia, stressed: “It is important to organize such exchanges of learning on Buddhism, to make them available for as many people as possible. While the conference is open to all, we realize that the vast majority of those who want to learn about Guru Padmasambhava and Buddhism cannot be present in person during those two days.”
The conference will be telecast live on Facebook and on YouTube.

This series represents a transcendence of our perceived reality, a freedom from our self inflicted shackles. Given any circumstance, our minds can wander, roam the earth, venture into untraversed realms and even dance with the Gods. These works in mixed media on paper have a predominance of pen and ink. The pen allows me a sense of control whereas the free flowing nature of the inks affords a life of its own, a balance of yin and yang. I am excited to invite you to view the series.
