screening of ‘Il Bidone’ by Federico Fellini

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre invites you to the film screening of ‘Il Bidone’ by Federico Fellini .The movie is subtitled in English and will be screened on Thursday, 30 May 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. at Italian Embassy Cultural Centre.

Il bidone also known as The Swindle or The Swindlers is a 1955 Italian film directed by Federico Fellini. It features Broderick Crawford, Richard Basehart and Giulietta Masina.

Released one year after the director’s internationally successful La Strada, Il bidone continues with many of the same socially conscious, neorealist-inspired themes while minimizing the poetic realism and extravagant vitality, that is today known as “felliniesque”, in favor of a more pointed political stance.

Synopsis: In the country outside Rome, a group of swindlers dress up as clerics and con poor farmers out of their savings. Another scam in a shanty town is to pretend they are officials taking deposits for apartments. The proceeds are spent on flashy cars, champagne and prostitutes.

One member of the gang, Picasso, pretends to his faithful wife Iris that he is a painter, but after a New Year’s Eve party among criminals she stops believing him. His conscience is pricked and he decides to quit. Another member, Augusto, meets his teenage daughter Patrizia who he has not seen for years, and his conscience is also awakened. However he is recognised in a cinema with her, arrested and jailed.

When released he forms a new gang to work the clergy scam among peasants. After swindling a large sum out of a farming family, he talks to their paralysed teenage daughter. Her plight touches him, and when the gang come to share out the gains he says he gave it all back. A row develops and he is battered to the ground. Stripping him, the crooks find he has concealed the takings in his clothes. On a snowy hillside, they leave him to a slow death.

Film Screening of ‘Roma’ by Federico Fellini

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre invites you to the film screening of ‘Roma’ by Federico Fellini .The movie is subtitled in English and will be screened on Thursday, 13 June 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. at Italian Embassy Cultural Centre.

Roma, also known as Fellini’s Roma, is a 1972 semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film depicting director Federico Fellini’s move from his native Rimini to Rome as a youth. It is a homage to the city, shown in a series of loosely connected episodes set during both Rome’s past and present. The plot is minimal, and the only “character” to develop significantly is Rome herself.

Plot: Federico Fellini recounts his youth in Rome. The film opens up with a long traffic jam to the city. Once there, scenes are shown depicting Rome in the 1930s, with people visiting a third-class theater and a brothel. The most famous scene depicts an elderly solitary noblewoman holding an extravagant liturgical fashion show for a Cardinal and other guests with priests and nuns parading in all kinds of bizarre costumes. The film eventually concludes with a group of young motorcyclists riding into the city and a melancholic shot of actress Anna Magnani, whom the film crew met in the street during shooting and who would die some months afterwards.

Director: Federico Fellini

Cast: Britta Barnes, Peter Gonzales Falcon, Fiona Florence

Year: 1972

Genres: Comedy | Drama

Event Description : MOVIE “Nabbie’s Love” Japanese with English Subtitles

Synopsis : Nanako quits her job in Tokyo to return to her home island where her grandfather, Keitatsu and grandmother, Nabbie, still live. In the ferry is SunRa who, dressed in a dandy tropical outfit, seems to have some nostalgic link to the island. One day, Nanako sees Nabbie and SunRa in each other’s arms. The illicit love affair shocks the conservative islanders. A formal clan meeting is held, the shaman is summoned and her verdict is that SunRa must leave and Nabbie must never see him again. Nanako learns from Keitatsu that, 60 years ago, Nabbie fell in love with SunRa but was forced to separate from him because of her family’s standing in the community. SunRa had to leave the island. Later on, Keitatsu, who is younger than Nabbie, married into her family. He also tells Nanako the secret of the bougainvillea flowers. Nanako begins to cry as the old man wearily tells her he never thought he’d see SunRa again. Nabbie never could forget her lover and she had faithfully written him once a year.

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre invites you to the film screening of ‘La ciociara’ by Vittorio De Sica. The movie is subtitled in English and will be screened on Thursday, 22 August 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. at Italian Embassy Cultural Centre.

La ciociara (English: Two Women), roughly translated as “The Woman from Ciociaria”) is a 1960 Italian film directed by Vittorio De Sica. It tells the story of a woman trying to protect her young daughter from the horrors of war. The film was adapted by De Sica and Cesare Zavattini from the novel of the same name written by Alberto Moravia. The story is fictional, but based on actual events of July 1943 in Rome and rural Lazio, and during what the Italians call the Marocchinate.

Summary: Cesira is a beautiful widow and a successful grocery store owner in Rome. WWII is raging, and she fears for her beloved daughter, 13-year-old Rosetta, amid the daily bombings. They travel to the village where Cesira was born, where Cesira believes they will be safer. There, they are happy even as food dwindles. A young intellectual, Michele, falls in love with Cesira, who is too consumed with the well-being of her daughter and their survival to return his timid advances. As the allies advance, Cesira decides to return to Rome – and encounter the horrors of war at last.
