Film Screening of ‘Roma’ by Federico Fellini

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre invites you to the film screening of ‘Roma’ by Federico Fellini .The movie is subtitled in English and will be screened on Thursday, 13 June 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. at Italian Embassy Cultural Centre.

Roma, also known as Fellini’s Roma, is a 1972 semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film depicting director Federico Fellini’s move from his native Rimini to Rome as a youth. It is a homage to the city, shown in a series of loosely connected episodes set during both Rome’s past and present. The plot is minimal, and the only “character” to develop significantly is Rome herself.

Plot: Federico Fellini recounts his youth in Rome. The film opens up with a long traffic jam to the city. Once there, scenes are shown depicting Rome in the 1930s, with people visiting a third-class theater and a brothel. The most famous scene depicts an elderly solitary noblewoman holding an extravagant liturgical fashion show for a Cardinal and other guests with priests and nuns parading in all kinds of bizarre costumes. The film eventually concludes with a group of young motorcyclists riding into the city and a melancholic shot of actress Anna Magnani, whom the film crew met in the street during shooting and who would die some months afterwards.

Director: Federico Fellini

Cast: Britta Barnes, Peter Gonzales Falcon, Fiona Florence

Year: 1972

Genres: Comedy | Drama

Duration: 100 Minutes

Subtitles: English

Event Description : MOVIE “Nabbie’s Love” Japanese with English Subtitles

Synopsis : Nanako quits her job in Tokyo to return to her home island where her grandfather, Keitatsu and grandmother, Nabbie, still live. In the ferry is SunRa who, dressed in a dandy tropical outfit, seems to have some nostalgic link to the island. One day, Nanako sees Nabbie and SunRa in each other’s arms. The illicit love affair shocks the conservative islanders. A formal clan meeting is held, the shaman is summoned and her verdict is that SunRa must leave and Nabbie must never see him again. Nanako learns from Keitatsu that, 60 years ago, Nabbie fell in love with SunRa but was forced to separate from him because of her family’s standing in the community. SunRa had to leave the island. Later on, Keitatsu, who is younger than Nabbie, married into her family. He also tells Nanako the secret of the bougainvillea flowers. Nanako begins to cry as the old man wearily tells her he never thought he’d see SunRa again. Nabbie never could forget her lover and she had faithfully written him once a year.

 12th October, Saturday | 9:30 am till 1:30 pm

Indian Classical music was once considered one of the easiest paths to spiritual enlightenment due to its inherent simplicity. However, with the passage of time, it has also evolved into a performing art. Despite the transformation, its inherent structure is still based on the art of improvisation, which is its primary USP.

Unlike composed music, the same Raga by the same artist sounds completely different on each occasion. There is a constant element of surprise and fascination for the listener.

The artist/student gets the opportunity to be the performer and the composer at the same time and create something new with each attempt instead of endlessly working towards recreating other artists’ work.

Raga music’s instinctive, intuitive, and improvisational nature makes it a direct extension of the artist’s personality and state of mind. It serves as a tool for self-expression and self-discovery, giving the artist space to be more authentic and the listeners, an opportunity to feel much more personally connected to the artist and the art itself.

Without most of us realizing, Indian Classical Music also heavily influences genres like film music, ghazals, bhajans, Sufi music, and much more. Therefore, even an elementary understanding of Raga music can greatly enhance the listening experience of the average listener.

The world of Indian Classical music has something to offer for everyone; be it people looking for entertainment or tools for self-discovery and everything else in between.
